baubüro in situ

baubüro in situ is an architectural firm based in Switzerland, renowned for its sustainable approach to circular construction. With over 25 years of experience, the firm is paving the way for reuse to become the new normal. Their ethos is rooted in the belief that architecture should be both responsive and responsible. They demonstrate a great understanding of existing constructions and materials and combine old and new, giving reused materials a new value. This approach not only preserves the architectural heritage, but also significantly reduces the environmental impact associated with new constructions and materials.

One of the hallmark strategies employed by baubüro in situ involves the careful deconstruction of buildings slated for demolition to salvage and repurpose high qualitative construction elements. This process not only saves resources, but also promotes the local economy and allows the inclusion of further sustainable strategies.

The work by the firm is characterised by a keen attention to detail and a commitment to local craftsmanship. The firm collaborates closely with artisans and craftsmen, ensuring that each project not only meets the functional and aesthetic requirements of the present day but also stands as a testament to the quality of traditional construction techniques. This collaboration extends to the communities in which projects are located, with the firm actively including and engaging local residents and stakeholders to ensure that their work contributes positively to the urban fabric. Over the past quarter-century, the firm has demonstrated that thoughtful renovation with reuse can result in spaces that are both beautiful and functional, bridging the gap between past and present.

Barbara Buser, one of the curators of the Library of Reuse, is a co-founder of the firm.
