Reuse of interlocking concrete blocks

Wiederverwendung von Betonverbundsteinen (reuse of interlocking concrete blocks) explains the possibilities of reusing concrete blocks from paving stones on private properties, footpaths and cycle paths, parking lots and driveways – areas frequently in need of redevelopment or renovation. The stones are typically dismantled and used as aggregate for recycled concrete or disposed of as construction waste.

Based on an analysis of the concrete block’s material properties, students at ETH Zurich and Barbara Buser show other possibilities for its reuse. It points to questions and difficulties that arise in the course of planning and implementation, potential pitfalls, which actors need to be on board, and how the construction process can be coordinated. Analyses and a project realised with the concrete blocks provide answers. The project and its documented execution, planning and implementation, is supplemented by manufacturer and producer interviews. The logistics of reusing concrete blocks was tested, and material passports were created to explore digital technologies for enabling a circular economy.
